Train driver shortage at the RhB - Rhaetian Railway

A press conference was held yesterday at the Rhaetian Railway in Switzerland. In addition to the RhB's record results for 2023 in terms of passenger numbers. "The unexpectedly very positive developments, especially in leisure and tourist transport, will have a very positive impact on RhB's 2023 business results." However, this great success has also increased the workload. RhB is currently short of at least 12 train drivers. The Rhaetian Railway therefore feels compelled to implement the following measures:

Adjustments to services to protect staff

The shortage of locomotive staff at RhB has become even more acute. The staffing situation has been very tense for some time, which is why individual trains had to be replaced by rail replacement buses in the course of 2023. RhB employs more train drivers than ever before. It is regarded as an attractive employer and is constantly recruiting new locomotive staff. Despite recruitment, an increase in the number of training places and various measures introduced to relieve the pressure, such as hiring in external staff and having other professional groups take over work, it has not been possible to fully alleviate the situation and RhB has a shortage of 12 train drivers. In order to protect employees and comply with legal regulations, RhB management, in consultation with the Canton of Graubünden and the Federal Office of Transport (FOT), has decided to reduce the number of engine driver hours required. This will be achieved by adjusting the services on offer. RhB Director Renato Fasciati comments: "It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to do without the full moon journeys, the Engadin and Surselva steam journeys and the Engadin triangular journeys this winter. Further train driver services will be saved by postponing the new Landwasser shuttle and only launching it in summer 2025. RhB is doing everything it can to improve the situation. Further measures for the period after the winter season are being developed and will be discussed with the federal and cantonal authorities. However, the full timetable offer is planned for the winter season.
